Carnaval d'Alost
L’UNESCO n’est plus complice mais ce n’est pas la fin de l’histoire au Carnaval d’Alost

Le Comité de Coordination des Organisations Juives de Belgique (CCOJB) prend acte que les caricatures scandaleuses du carnaval d’Alost lui ont coûté son inscription sur la liste du patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’UNESCO.
Le CCOJB maintient qu’il ne sonde pas les intentions des organisateurs du carnaval, du groupe responsable de ces caricatures, ou du bourgmestre d’Alost, ce qui ne l’empêche en rien de dénoncer la reproduction de caricatures antisémites, notamment utilisées par les nazis, dans le cadre d’un évènement populaire.
Yohan Benizri, président du CCOJB et vice-président du Congrès juif européen et du Congrès juif mondial, a déclaré:
“C’est une réponse à tous ceux qui veulent nuancer, justifier ou excuser l’intolérable mais ce n’est malheureusement pas la fin de l’histoire. Nous déplorons, mais aujourd’hui nous redoutons également, les conséquences désastreuses du Carnaval, qu’il soit reconnu ou non par l’UNESCO. La diffusion massive (directement et indirectement) de préjugés antisémites extrêmement chargés (nez crochus, contrôle de l’économie et des banques,…) n’est pas ce que nous voulons pour nos enfants dans le cadre d’un évènement familial. C’est évidemment néfaste pour eux et pour un public non averti et mondial.”
Le CCOJB a également fait part plus tôt cette semaine de sa consternation à la lecture d’un article rapportant le traitement du dossier par les autorités locales d’Alost. Celles-ci semblent maintenant perpétuer, cette fois très sérieusement, un mythe violemment antisémite en déclarant que leurs arguments n’auraient pas fait le poids contre “l’immense réseau de la communauté juive.”
Yohan Benizri a ajouté à cet égard: “Les autorités locales d’Alost prétendent-elles encore qu’il s’agit de satire lors de délibérations officielles? Il faudrait peut-être leur rappeler que la population belge juive représente moins de 0,4% de tous les belges, et que les juifs représentent moins de 0,2% de la population mondiale. Le complotisme, et les fantasmes de pouvoir, c’est indigne de nos élus.”

Het Coördinatiecomité van de Joodse Organisaties van België (CCJOB) neemt akte van het feit dat de verwerpelijke karikaturen aanwezig op het Aalsters carnavalgebeuren de stad zijn plaats kostte op de Unesco-lijst van het immateriële erfgoed van de mensheid.
Het CCJOB herhaalt dat het zich niet uitspreekt over de bedoelingen van de organisatoren van het carnaval, over de verantwoordelijken voor de karikaturale poppen of over de plaatselijke burgemeester. Het CCJOB wil echter het gebruik aanklagen, tijdens een volksfeest, van antijoodse karikaturen die teruggaan op de nazi-tijd.
Yohan Benizri, de voorzitter van het CCJOB, tevens vice-voorzitter van het Europees Joods Congres en van het Joods Wereldcongres, verklaarde:
“Het is een antwoord aan het adres van allen die het onsmakelijke zoeken te nuanceren, te rechtvaardigen of te vergoeilijken, maar het verhaal is hiermee niet afgerond. Wij betreuren, maar nu vrezen wij eveneens, de nefaste gevolgen , van het carnaval dat rechtstreeks of onrechtstreeks, erkend of niet door de Unesco op grote schaal anti-joodse vooroordelen (haakneuzen, geldhandel en economische wereldheerschappij) verspreid. Dergelijke giftige gemeenplaatsen horen niet thuis op wat een plezierig en vreugdevol feest zou moeten zijn. Onze kinderen mogen en moeten niet worden blootgesteld aan soortgelijke clichés. Door en door foute pedagogiek noemt men zoiets.
Het CCJOB heeft eerder week met ontsteltenis kennisgenomen van een artikel dat de manier beschrijft waarop de Aalsterse autoriteiten het dossier hebben behandeld. Hun verwijzingen naar een uitgebreid joods “machtsapparaat” ligt in de lijn van een eeuwenoude gewelddadige anti-joodse mythe.
In dit verband wijst Yohan Benizri erop: ” Beweren de Aalsterse autoriteiten tijdens hun officiële verklaringen, nog steeds dat het hier louter en alleen om een satire gaat? Men zou ze misschien moeten duidelijk maken dat de joodse bevolking van BelgIë slechts 0,4 % bedraagt van de totale Belgische bevolking en dat joden minder dan 0,2% vormen van de wereldbevolking. Het complotisme en die waandenkbeelden over de zg. macht, zijn onze verkozenen onwaardig!

The Belgian Federation of Jewish Organizations (CCOJB) took note of the fact that the 2019 antisemitic float in Aalst carnival resulted in the delisting of the event from UNESCO’s cultural heritage list.
The CCOJB insists that it did not question the intentions of the carnival’s organizers, the group responsible for the float or the mayor of Aalst. Intentions, in this case, may as well be irrelevant: the CCOJB strongly condemns the reproduction of antisemitic stereotypes, also used by the Nazis, in the context of a festive event.
Yohan Benizri, president of the CCOJB and vice-president of the European Jewish Congress and the World Jewish Congress, stated:
“This is a response to any attempts to nuance, justify or forgive intolerable imagery, but this is not the end of the story, unfortunately. We fear the Aalst carnival excesses, whether or not recognized by UNESCO. The massive spread, directly or indirectly, of antisemitic stereotypes (crooked noses, control of the economy or the banks, etc) is not what we should put on display for our children. It is obviously harmful for them and for the world – social media only emphasizes the issue.”
Earlier this week, the CCOJB expressed its deepest concern upon reading a press article regarding the deliberations of local authorities in the aftermath of the carnival. Local representatives seem to have spread, this time very seriously, the most abject antisemitic stereotype, by arguing that their arguments would never be heard by UNESCO given the “enormous network of the Jewish community.”
Yohan Benizri added: “Local authorities in Aalst cannot hide behind satyre anymore. We should remind them that Belgian Jews account for less than 0,4% of the Belgian population, and that Jews worldwide account for less than 0,2% of the world population. Conspiracy theories are unbecoming.”
